Return

It's been awhile since I last wrote. Things have been a little busy, as of late. I finally got my final grades turned in, so that's one less thing on my mind.

My father (79) had his pacemaker replaced with the defibrilator type. He's doing much better than he was. He seems to have more energy when I talk with him over Skype. He says his legs don't hurt anymore.

My mother (80 in September) is still not feeling well. She had liver problems that we think are due to the cholesterol meds she was taking; the doctor had her stop that and most of her other meds over a month ago. Hopefully, the doctors will find out why it persists.

Hot and Humid

As the title says, today was another hot and humid one. The thermometer in my back veranda read over 100F.

I went to my office early this afternoon, as the Office of International Affairs needed me to edit an announcement. That took about an hour. After that, I returned home--if I have to be hot and sweaty, at least I want the best chance for comfort!

I had a call from KBS broadcasting. They want to interview me regarding Korean traditional archery. The fifteen minute-or-so conversation was all in Korean, so I burned up quite a few gray cells on that one. I guess the interviewer will visit here sometime next week.

Weekend

I was incommunicado over the weekend, as I stayed at a house we own where the internet was cut off. Actually, we had internet for some time, but the telecom company evidently finally figured out it was supposed to be disconnected.

I just heard from my son today that out of the sixty-some musical acts who competed in the first leg of the Battle of the Bands, his and one other were chosen. Congratulations, son!

The weather continues to be hot and humid, so I'm mainly sitting in front of a couple fans to keep cool (this apartment doesn't have airconditioning).

Final Day

Today I gave my summer class their final exam. It went well, I think. I hurried up and corrected their exams and figured out a snapshot grade for them as well, posting the results on my office door. I still have to wait for their reading projects to be turned in.

After gathering up my stuff at the guest house, I headed into Kyongju. My son, Nick, was at his guitar institute getting ready for a qualification competition for a Battle of the Bands. His group is called Covenant, and he plays lead electric. I went there to listen to them; they did a great job and were cheered all the way through their piece.

End of the Summer Class

Today is the last actual class day; tomorrow is the final exam. However, like the other profs' classes, my students want to order pizza, so we will have that the first part of class. The second part of class will be for them to take a practice final.

I would go into Kyongju after class, but since I have to give the final at 9 a.m. tomorrow, I decided not to. Instead, I'll probably head in after the exam tomorrow.

This morning, a huge wasp, the large type that seem to have armor plating, was out in my back veranda. I sprayed it through the screen in my bedroom. I'm not sure how it got in, as there doesn't seem to be anyplace it could enter. I wonder if maybe there is a nest in the ceiling of the guest house. I'll keep a lookout for more.

Sad news

I just heard that a colleague's father was killed in a boating accident. That's really sad. My thoughts and prayers go out to him and his family.

A couple days late...

This past weekend was busy, so I didn't have a lot of time to write. It rained hard and steady yesterday, but today is mostly overcast with some sun. Only a few more days of class to go...

Saturday

Not a busy day, but not boring, either. This morning, I took Mike Sandez to the bus station. After that, I returned to my guest house and cleaned it up a bit, as my wife is planning to stop by this evening. When I had a little time in the afternoon, I went to my office to correct papers; I also printed off the final exam for my class (a little early, but why wait for the rush?).

TGIF

Well, today is Friday. Two-thirds of the summer class I'm teaching is done. However, this weekend I will have to spend time correcting my students' writing. Oh, well...

Not a lot

Yesterday, I taught the 8th class of a sixteen day summer session at the university I work at. Right now, my students are taking their midterm exam. I also took their photo during a break.

Summer in Korea

The day is hot and humid, as is usual in Korea (it's why I prefer to spend summers in the U.S.). The dragonflies are darting around, looking like an aerial dogfight.

Day 1

Just started this blog, so there isn't too much to put on at this point.
